Our history

IHA was founded in September 2015 as a platform to coordinate volunteer efforts responding to humanitarian emergencies across the Balkan route. IHA has since developed into a volunteer-based organisation with a focus on Northern Greece, where it has a continuous presence since early 2016.

our mission

We are a grassroots organisation providing humanitarian aid and assistance to refugees across Europe. We believe that Europe is not facing a refugee crisis but a crisis of solidarity and shared values. For us, the answer is taking humanitarian action – based in civil society and beyond national borders.
We stand for a Europe that lives up to its own standards and puts human rights and dignity first.

1. material Aid

Our warehouse in Northern Greece supports thousands of refugees in the region with essential relief supplies.

2. human Dignity

Making aid about human dignity, through choice-based distributions and community & skills building.

3. flexibility

We’re able to quickly respond to changing needs and to support people that fall through the cracks of the official aid system.

4. Independent

We’re funded exclusively by donations and grassroots grants – no strings attached.

5. community

Our community center in Lagadikia is a space for learning, community building and cultural exchange.

6. Connect

We’re part of a Europe-wide grassroots network, connecting people willing to help with actors working to defend refugee's rights in Greece.

Reports & Policies

At IHA we are dedicated to making a positive impact to forcibly displaced people in an ever-changing environment. As we navigate a complex and often unstable context, we recognise the crucial importance of maintaining the highest standards of ethical conduct and safeguarding the well-being of all those involved in our operations.

Our policies and reports are a testament to our commitment to transparency, accountability, and the well-being of the individuals and communities we serve. In alliance with our humanitarian goals, we have established a comprehensive Code of Conduct and Safeguarding Policy.

In case you have any concerns or information related to possible misconduct by IHA or its staff, volunteer, partners or any other associated personnel, please fill in an Incident Report to IHA Greek branch (external) to report to IHA’s Safeguarding Lead and Board. If you do not feel comfortable reporting to IHA’s Greece team, please use the Incident Report to IHA HQ (external) to report only to IHA’s Board.
