Lagadikia Free Shop – Help us to keep helping!
Refugees from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan keep arriving to Northern Greece from the land border with Turkey, crossing the dangerous Evros river on the border with Turkey. There is little to no institutional support and supplies are running out.
In June, we opened a “free shop” in the remote village of Lagadikia to support the population of the nearby camp. Since then, we’ve welcomed over 900 individual customers. The camp is one of the main reception sites for new arrivals in Northern Greece. Because aylum services have been overwhelmed with the number of arrivals since April, it takes months for people to gain access to cash assistance and other services. They rely on our solidarity for their basic needs.
Our free shop stocks fresh fruit and vegetables, dry food and various hygiene articles. Customers are allocated points they can spend on items as they choose. Now supplies are running low and we had to start rationing essential supplies like diapers and food. Some diaper sizes have completely run out already.
Your donation enables us to restock on the most urgently needed items for 600 people living in Lagadikia and to keep the shop running.
